Maniago Safaris
-
May 8, 2007.
Spoke
about the 'Seventh Wonder of the
World' the Masai Mara, "green
travel" and treading lightly on the
environment.
Maniago has several community
projects in Kenya, including the
home building for children at
Kianyaga orphanage -
www.angelsofhope.co.ke.
Also covered were the
recent Kenyan government rulings
that will result in the division of
large tracts of Masaii tribal land
adjacent to the Masai Mara, and the
probable resultant impact on the
wildebeeste migration. Kudos
was given to those few operators
like Porini Camps who have been able
to successfully contract for
conservancies.

Travel Guard Insurance
- Tina
Oleskinski, Regional Sales Manager,
spoke about how companies like
Travel Guard are vital to our
industry, how to sell & promote
travel insurance, and how Travel
Guard is helping to 'give back' in
Africa, through a program sponsored
by Travel Guard founder John Noel.

Notes from
the National Board

big response from last year's
fundraiser, we are once again
awarding two coach SAA
airline tickets and accommodations -
to either South Africa or Kenya.
Tickets, priced at $20 per chance
are unlimited - just submit one
business card per chance, with your

APTA, to any Board Member. Tickets
will be on sale at the July program
and at the annual Braii (see
above). The lucky duck winner will
be drawn at the National Forum in
September, in Chicago. Details can
be found by clicking here.
The National
Forum is scheduled for September
27th and 28th, in Chicago. As in
past years, our Chapter sponsors a
limited number of interested
attendees, so notify any Board
member if your are interested.
Further details will soon be
available on the National APTA
website at
http://www.apta.biz
Notes
from your Chapter
We will be conducting our annual
election of Board Members in the
month of July. Watch your email
for your ballot which will be
tabulated electronically. No Hangin
Chads for us by golly!
Charity Report from Jackie Sathre
For the past 3 years now our
chapter has supported various
Charities within Africa.
This past year has been
Madagascar- Wildlife
Conservation Society.
(Habitat: Conservation of
Endangered Biodiversity).
Members have an
opportunity to give money in
small or large numbers at each
meeting and then our APTA
treasury will match the amount
collected up to $350.00.
We will begin researching a new
charity to present to our
chapter at one of the future
meetings.
To make it more
interesting we will sell tickets
to members and do a 50/50 split;
50% of what is collected will go
to the charity and 50% will go
to the member whose ticket is
drawn.
There are so many worthwhile
causes to support.
The letters of thanks we
receive speak
great words of gratitude.
Thanks to all of you for
your past support.
Really
Big News!
Sarah Fazendin (accompanied by
husband Eric)
 presented
the world with a beautiful baby
girl, Jossilyn Judith Fazendin, on
April 23rd.
Sarah reports that Jossilyn has
asked when she gets to go to Africa
next?
Trust us - WAY CUTE!

Namibia - 2008
Mark
your calendars for early May 2008
for an incredible FAM trip to
Namibia.
Although we are still
reviewing several itineraries, we
are planning the trip to coordinate
with Indaba 2008.
You don't have to attend
Indaba, but if you are, this will
help you plan your flights more
easily and decrease your costs.
The tour will be rather
inclusive with only 4-8 participants
due to the small aircraft we will be
using.
Also, we are looking at a
relatively short trip of 6-7 days.
Besides Indaba, we are
exploring additional extensions to
Cape Town and/or Botswana.
In order to assess the viability of
this destination, please contact Pam
Rathke at 720-746-0748 or
pam.rathke@gmail.com
if you are very interested in this
tour.

Lucille Carroll
is this
issue's
Rocky Mountain
APTA Advocate!
The Rocky Mountain Chapter recently
awarded Lucille Carroll our first $1000
scholarship.
As a benefit of membership and in
keeping with the mission of APTA to
educate our members, the chapter decided
to offer a scholarship to be used toward
the Ya'lla Egypt FAM.
Scholarship applicants were required to
submit an application and write a
300-500 word essay on why they deserved
the scholarship. The $1000 was sent to
Ya'lla to help pay for her participation
in the Egypt FAM this May.
Lucille, a travel veteran with over 23
years in the industry, has taken over 14
trips to Africa.
Her first trip to Africa was on
an APTA Fam to South Africa "around
1990".
On each trip, Lucille brings supplies to
the schools she visits and encourages
her clients to do the same.
Click Here for a look at
some photos from her visits.
She says that since "APTA changed
her life, she would try to change a few
African lives."
Her favorite African destination
is Botswana.
Although a New England accent still
gives her away as a Massachussetts
native, Lucille and her family chose a
Colorado lifestyle in 1978. After being
a stay-at-home Mom until her older son
and younger twins were teens,
she decided to return to the
workplace as a travel professional. She
has worked for Canyon Travel, Free
Spirit Travel and is currently with The
Travel Society in Boulder.
Lucille's interests include travel (but,
of course!), golf, skiing and scuba
diving.
Her family has grown to include 5
grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Joseph,her younger son, is about
to begin his second tour of duty in
Iraq.
In addition to
the
many fun-loving facts about Lucille that
many of our members already know, here
is one that you probably don't know.
Lucille - or "Luci" as she is
know in the poker community - won
$70,000 last year playing Texas Hold-em!
Bill, you can place
your bet on seeing Lucille in Africa
again later this year!
Nominate your
favorite Rocky Mountain APTA
Advocate
and we will feature them soon.

Wandering re-establishes the
original harmony which once existed
between man and the universe.
~Anatole France
The
traveler was active; he went
strenuously in search of people,
of adventure, of experience.
The tourist is passive; he
expects interesting things to
happen to him. He goes
"sight-seeing."
~Daniel J. Boorstin
What
you've done becomes the judge of
what you're going to do -
especially in other people's
minds. When you're traveling,
you are what you are right there
and then. People don't have
your past to hold against you.
No yesterdays on the road.
